Gay Naturists International (GNI) was founded to support and affirm a community that long existed but was rarely visible: men who practice naturism as a healthy, social, and affirming way of life within the LGBTQ+ community.
At a time when both gay men and naturists were frequently misunderstood—or excluded entirely—GNI emerged to provide connection, dignity, and representation for those living at the intersection of both identities.
GNI’s advocacy has never been about protest—it has been about presence.
By existing openly and responsibly, GNI challenges harmful assumptions:
That nudity must be sexual
That gay men cannot create respectful, non-exploitative spaces
That minority communities must conform to majority norms to be valid
Through decades of consistent leadership, GNI has helped normalize the idea that body freedom, consent, and community well-being are compatible values.
One of GNI’s most enduring contributions is the annual GNI Gathering, first held in the early 1990s and continuing today. Hosted each summer in a private, rural setting, the Gathering has become:
The largest recurring gay naturist event in North America
A safe entry point for newcomers exploring naturism
A cornerstone of social connection for long-time members
Beyond the Gathering, GNI has served as a national hub, connecting:
Local and regional naturist groups
Individual members in areas without clubs
International partners in the broader naturist movement
Organized naturism in North America has existed for more than a century, but for much of that history, gay men were either invisible or unwelcome within mainstream naturist spaces. At the same time, LGBTQ+ social environments often lacked places where the human body could be experienced without sexualization, shame, or performance.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, informal gatherings of gay men practicing social nudity began forming as a response to this gap. These early groups emphasized:
Body acceptance
Mutual respect
Non-sexual social nudity
Community over commodification
They laid the foundation for what would become an organized gay naturist movement.
In 1983, one of the first nationally recognized efforts—Gay and Lesbian Naturists (GLN)—was formed under the umbrella of The Naturist Society. As participation grew, it became clear that gay men needed an independent voice and structure that reflected their specific experiences, challenges, and values.
That transition occurred in 1992, when the organization formally became Gay Naturists International (GNI).
This marked a turning point:
GNI became self-governed
Its mission centered specifically on men’s naturism
Advocacy expanded beyond events to education, visibility, and legitimacy
GNI promotes naturism as a healthy, social, and life-affirming practice for men—free from shame, coercion, or unwarranted sexual expectation.
By organizing events, supporting local groups, and maintaining a public presence, GNI has helped demonstrate that gay male naturists are a valid and responsible minority community, deserving of the same respect as any other cultural group.
While rooted in gay male experience, GNI has consistently welcomed bisexual, queer, trans masculine, and allied participants who share its values of respect, consent, and non-sexual social nudity.
Today, Gay Naturists International continues to evolve and grow while remaining rooted in its founding principles. As conversations around body image, gender, and identity expand, GNI remains committed to:
What began as a small, courageous effort to claim space has grown into a lasting institution—one that honors the past while welcoming future generations of male naturists.
